Benny Blanco Thought Selena Gomez ‘Hated’ Him When They First Met: ‘99% of It Was In My Head’
The singer-songwriter revealed that he nearly friend-zoned himself when meeting his now-fiancée.

Love is a fickle thing, which is something Benny Blanco found out the hard way when he first met his now-fiancée, Selena Gomez.
During his appearance with Gomez on the Jay Shetty Podcast on Monday (March 24), Blanco revealed that he was convinced that the “Lose You to Love Me” singer did not like him when they first started working with one another. “I thought she hated me, I really did,” he said in the interview while Gomez blushed next to him. “I would be like, ‘Wow, she really didn’t talk to me, I thought I was being nice’ … Obviously, 99% of it was in my head.”
In fact, Blanco revealed that in trying to “smooth things over” with the pop star, he nearly friend-zoned himself when he tried to set Gomez up with one of his single friends. “I was talking to her and I said, ‘Oh my God, I have so many good single guy friends, we have dinners at the house all the time, you should come over sometime,'” he said. “I wasn’t even thinking about anything [romantic].”
But it was when the two started messaging one another “the worst” pictures of themselves that Gomez started to feel that spark with Blanco. “We were talking about ugly photos, because I always say that I take the worst photos sometimes,” Gomez said. “Maybe I thought it was just going to be flirting and not anything else, but I really just started to fall for him.”
The pair appeared on the podcast to promote their new collaborative album, I Said I Love You First, which came out Friday (March 21). The new LP quickly garnered plenty of attention from listeners. One such fan was pop superstar Taylor Swift herself, who shared “I LOVE THIS ALBUM SO MUCH” on her Instagram Stories over the weekend.
