Bowen Yang’s Funniest Day From Wedding Banquet Is NSFW (Not Safe for Weddings)
Joan Chen made her scenes memorable for those not even on set.
Some on-set memories are so special that they become lore — even for those who weren’t around that day. That’s especially true if the memory is Joan Chen getting intimate with somebody wearing a lion’s head. At the Vulture Spot at Sundance, Bowen Yang explained that the funniest day filming The Wedding Banquet was one he wasn’t even there for. “Joan letting the lion-dance lion eat her ass,” Yang shared as the rest of the cast laughed. “Some of us weren’t even there on set that day, but the crew the next day was like, ‘Joan got rimmed by the lion.’” (Thankfully, it seems like the scene made the final cut of the film, according to the teaser trailer.)
Director Andrew Ahn tackles the reimagining of the 1993 queer classic from Ang Lee. Min (Han Gi-chan), who feels frustrated with his commitment-adverse boyfriend Chris (Yang), decides to marry his friend Angela (Kelly Marie Tran) in exchange for a green card and expensive in-vitro fertilization treatments for her partner Lee (Lily Gladstone). However, their plan is complicated by Min’s family visiting them to throw an expensive wedding. “It was the first gay film I’d ever seen as an 8-year-old. It blew my nascent gay brain,” Ahn said of his connection to the original, adding that he and original writer James Schamus “really crafted a reimagining to tell a story about a modern queer family.”
