If the MCU is indeed a “giant slop machine,” then the moviegoing public chose to be piggies at the trough this weekend. Audiences ate up Captain America: Brave New World, earning $88.5 million over the weekend with a projected $100 million domestically by Presidents’ Day (per Variety). Internationally, the film earned an additional $92.4 million, for a $192 million opening through Monday. It’s the biggest opening of the year thusfar, but the film’s true test will be its second week. Will we see another fall off like Quantumania?

The other big box office story this weekend was the international reception of Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy. The film earned $14.9 million at the U.K. box office, marking it as the biggest opening for a romcom in U.K. history. How would the film have fared against Cap this weekend in the U.S.? Impossible to know! Universal decided to drop the fourth Bridget Jones film as a Peacock ‘sclusie for Valentine’s Day in America.
