Christopher Nolan to Bring The Odyssey to the Big Screen
Several more actors have joined Tomdaya in the cast.
Who’s joining Tomdaya in the packed ensemble cast of Christopher Nolan’s next movie, The Odyssey? Reportedly, a bunch of actors who have already appeared in the Nolan-verse before, with the latest additions including Himesh Patel (Tenet), Elliot Page (Inception), and Bill Irwin (Interstellar). Robert Pattinson and several other stars who have previously worked with Nolan are also already rumored to play the main characters in his upcoming adaptation of the Greek epic. But the director is shooting this film in “brand new IMAX film technology,” so the project will quite literally be a massive reunion either way. Below, everything we know about The Odyssey, including what it’s about (sorry, not vampires), where it’s filming, and when it’s coming out.
What’s it about?
Described as “a mythic action epic shot across the world,” The Odyssey is based on Homer’s ancient Greek poem about a king’s long, perilous journey back home to his wife after the Trojan War. Universal announced the title of the film via a post on X in December 2024. We still haven’t gotten official plot details since then, but if the movie sticks to its source material, expect to see gods, goddesses, sirens, creatures, and a lot of death.
So it’s not a vampire movie?
Nope, not unless Universal forgot to tell us that this is a vamped-up take on the original epic. There was rampant speculation about Nolan’s next movie before the title was announced, with THR noting at one point that it had been rumored to be either a “period vampire thriller” or a “helicopter action thriller.” But of course, it turned out to be a third, unrelated thing.
Who’s in the cast?
We haven’t seen a triangle this powerful since Zendaya was with two other little white boys: Christopher Nolan got Tomdaya to star in his next film. This will be Tom Holland and Zendaya’s first movie together outside the Marvel universe. What’s going to happen when two of the biggest stars in the world separately, and are even more famous as a couple, are together in a movie that’s certain to get the attention of film bros around the globe? If we had to guess, we’d say lots of box-office success and lots of awards attention. That’s just how these guys roll.
A good chunk of the reported cast are past Nolan collaborators, including Anne Hathaway, who was in The Dark Knight Rises and Interstellar, and Matt Damon, who was in Interstellar and Oppenheimer. Robert Pattinson is also traveling back in time to reunite with his Tenet director, while THR reports that star Benny Safdie will go from a role in Oppenheimer to a role in The Odyssey. Deadline reported on January 31 that three more Nolan-verse alums —Himesh Patel (Tenet), Elliot Page (Inception), and Bill Irwin (Interstellar) — will also be embarking on this voyage.
Still, don’t go thinking that Nolan won’t work with any new faces for The Odyssey. Samantha Norton, Charlize Theron, and Lupita Nyong’o have all never starred in a Nolan film before, but are reportedly also on board.
That’s a big cast. Who are the main characters?
According to a November 2024 report from The Hollywood Reporter, the goss ‘round the Universal canteen is that Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, and Robert Pattinson are the Core Four of the film.
Where and when is it filming?
Per Variety, part of The Odyssey will film on the Sicilian island Favignana, known as “goat island,” which is believed to be one of the real-life locations that Homer imagined Odysseus traveling to. Filming in Favignana is reportedly expected to begin sometimes around late March. According to Variety, there are also plans to shoot in Sicily’s Eolian islands, the United Kingdom, and Morocco.
Does The Odyssey have a release date?
Yup. It’s currently set to sail into theaters on July 17, 2026 in IMAX.
