Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie Are Opera Impresarios Now
“When you think about Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton, you don’t go to opera.” “You don’t?”
Twenty-one years after they made legendary television by mildly terrorizing a small town in Arkansas on The Simple Life, Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie are reuniting for a three-episode reunion special, and it isn’t entirely what you’d think it would be. After four seasons of taking on blue-collar jobs (and one season of housewifery), Paris & Nicole: The Encore will follow the 2024 Vulture Festival all-stars as they “try to produce a once-in-a-lifetime operatic performance based on their self-coined phrase, ‘Sanasa.’”
Prince of Peacock (or a very good soundalike) Alan Cumming narrates a new trailer for the miniseries, which in true OG Simple Life fashion lovingly drags the gworls, saying, “What they lack in musical acumen and a general knowledge of the arts they will have to make up elsewhere.” The trailer shows the two pitching their opera concept to a baffled Kathy Hilton, running auditions (featuring Sia!), and visiting the small Arkansas town where their reality-TV journey began because “to write their magnum opus, they must first revisit their past.” Cue a visit to Walmart, where they sell so much more than just stuff for walls.
“Sanasa,” for those who have managed to wash the memory of it out of their ears over the past two decades, is a very catchy, stupid song they sang throughout The Simple Life that just goes, “Sanasa, sanasa, sanasa-sa sanasa” over and over again until they either get bored of it or are forced to stop. An entire “Sanasa” opera totally aligns with Hilton’s trollish sense of humor and Richie’s honest-to-goodness aptitude for musical comedy. On December 12, the three-parter will debut and operatic history will be made. Take that, Maria.
