Rihanna Calls Out Use of Artificial Intelligence on Her Voice to Doctor a Clip of Her Speaking

An Instagram user recently used artificial intelligence to make it sound like Rihanna said things that never actually came out of her mouth — and the star isn’t happy.

On Wednesday (Feb. 5), the Fenty mogul jumped in the comments on a video doctored to sound like she was listing out her “most expensive purchases” to set the record straight. “Who tf is this talking??!” she commented.

The original poster didn’t flag their use of AI in the video or in its caption, but the user — who received a number of comments wondering if it was — did confirm in the comments that the technology was used. The video in question finds Ri “talking” about her luxury real estate and methods of transportation, with the generated voice saying, “First up, my Beverly Hills mansion, worth of $13 million, and my rented house in London that costs about 50,000 per week … When I need to fly, my Gulfstream G550 private jet worth $61 million makes every trip first class.”

Even before the “Umbrella” singer commented, the content of the video was enough for some viewers to know it wasn’t really her speaking. “Rih would never boast like this. Real fans know wassup. AI,” one person commented.

“Our girl Riri would never,” another fan wrote, while a third person added, “This is Ai. Ain’t no way.”

The video isn’t the first time the billionaire’s famous voice has been used for unauthorized AI projects — a trend that numerous stars have spoken out against beyond Ri. In 2023, a fake Rihanna duet with Bad Bunny circulated on SoundCloud, seemingly made by the same person who created the viral AI-generated Drake/The Weeknd collaboration “Heart On My Sleeve.”

But while she isn’t actually giving detailed rundowns of her assets, Rihanna real, authentic voice will be used in the new animated Smurfs movie, in which she stars as Smurfette. The trailer for the July-slated film — which Ri also produced — dropped earlier this week, featuring a personal introduction from the “Love on the Brain” musician.
