Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag, the married couple known for starring in The Hills, are among a group of over 20 people suing L.A. and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power due to the L.A. wildfires. Pratt and Montag, who lived in Pacific Palisades, lost their home in the wildfires and documented the process on social media. They filed their lawsuit on January 21, alleging inverse condemnation, per the Los Angeles Times, which awards property owners money when their property is harmed by public use. The suit blames the city’s water supply and infrastructure for their home’s damage, citing that the Santa Ynez Reservoir was offline for repairs that were requested in January 2024 and were not going to finish until April 2025 at the earliest, according to reporting from the Times.

The claim says that L.A. and the Department of Water and Power made “the conscious decision to operate the water supply system with the reservoir drained and unusable as a ‘cost-saving’ measure.” DWP claimed the Santa Ynez Reservoir was taken out of service because of drinking-water regulations. Pratt, Montag, and the rest of the defendants are seeking damages that will be determined at trial.
