There’s a Purple Rain Check on Netflix’s Prince Documentary
The Prince Estate and Netflix both mutually agreed to not release the documentary.
It’s the last day of all time for Netflix’s six-part Prince documentary directed by Ezra Edelman. On February 6, Netflix and the Prince Estate released a joint statement that they’ll be working together to create a documentary all about The Artist (Formerly Known as Prince) and canceling the series that was already in the works. They wrote, “The Prince Estate and Netflix have come to a mutual agreement that will allow the estate to develop and produce a new documentary featuring exclusive content from Prince’s archive. As a result, the Netflix documentary will not be released.” In another post on X, the official Prince account added, “The Vault Has Been Freed.”
Edelman had worked on the documentary for more than five years, reports the New York Times in a piece about the project. Edelman and Netflix retained the rights to the documentary’s final cut, but they had given the estate permission to review it for “factual accuracy.” It seems that Netflix needed the help of the estate and their archive to get the documentary done, as the same report claims that “there was almost nothing that was spontaneous or personal in the vault, almost no footage of him recording or writing,” aka the vault the filmmakers had access to. Variety reported last year that an insider claimed the documentary was filled with “dramatic” factual inaccuracies.
