Where Does Agatha All Along Go From Here?

What lies down the road for our characters? Here’s what we can predict about their futures in the MCU.

Major spoilers ahead for the finale episodes of Agatha All Along.

Marvel pulled off a finale. Well, showrunner Jac Schaffer and company did. Sure, Agatha All Along indulged in a little witch-on-witch fight in “Follow Me, My Friend, To Glory at the End,” but even Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) admitted, even with the help of Billy (Joe Locke) in full Wiccan regalia, you can’t fight Death (Aubrey Plaza). The two-part finale eschewed blindingly obvious and unnecessary Marvel Cinematic Universe tie-ins and instead offered emotionally charged answers to the questions that plagued the nine-episode season, such as Billy/Teen’s identity, the source of Rio and Agatha’s contention, the truth behind the Witches’ Road, and the heartbreaking fate of Nicky Scratch, Agatha’s son.

But even as Agatha wrapped up with many answered questions, it left behind the specter of a few more, as a ghostly Agatha and Billy headed off to find Tommy, Billy’s brother. So let’s attempt to answer them ourselves.

So, Agatha’s a ghost now?
Yes, leave it to Agatha to find a way to still be in people’s business. In the comics, Agatha taking on a non-corporeal form is common. Early on, she was murdered by Wanda, but later returned by her side to continue mentoring her. Witches, what can you say? It’s very similar to Agatha All Along, where Hahn’s Agatha is now inclined to mentor Billy. Like mother, like son!

And there’s really no Witches’ Road?
There currently is no Witches’ Road in the MCU. Its origins and the ballad to enter were seemingly a scam made up by Agatha and her son Nicky to continue draining other witches’ magic. But it’s safe to assume the MCU wouldn’t just abandon such a juicy location from the comics, which reminds me…

So, no Wanda this time, huh?
Nope. There were plenty of great mentions of our Scarlet Witch throughout the season, but we couldn’t even get confirmation that she was dead or alive after the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Death was there — it would’ve been an easy ask! The easiest out-of-universe explanation is that the MCU probably had some trouble getting Elizabeth Olsen to sign a contract to return and thought it best to leave her character’s fate ambiguous. She seemed content to be out of the MCU bubble post-Doctor Strange, but some recent interviews hint that she could be ready to come back with the right story. Jac Schaeffer, sharpen your pencils! Charge your laptop! Buy some fresh BIC pens!

Meanwhile, the easiest in-universe answer is maybe the Witches’ Road is real, and Wanda, similar to the Scarlet Witch: Witches’ Road comic of 2016, is there: an alternate dimension that exists out of time and space where it would be incredibly hard to reach her or know if she was alive or not, just saying. If anybody could find the actual Witches’ Road, it would be the mythical Scarlet Witch.

Will Jennifer Kale and Rio/Death return?
Jennifer Kale (Sasheer Zamata) unbinding herself was one of the most emotional beats in these episodes chock full of them. In the end, Kale was able to get back her (pretty pink) magic and dig her way out of Billy’s imagined Witches’ Road — though we don’t see where she flies away to.

If we go by comics history, we could see Kale again in an as-of-now-only-theoretical Midnight Sons project. The Midnight Sons are group of mystical heroes brought together to ward off demons, and the lineup has included Kale and other current MCU heroes like Doctor Strange, Wong, Elsa Bloodstone and Jack Russel from Werewolf By Night, Moon Knight, Blade (if that ever gets off the ground), and Ghost Rider, which is a character not in the MCU as of now but rumors have been swirling.

As for Rio/Death, Aubrey Plaza has told Time that she’s “hesitant to become part of that machine,” meaning the MCU, but she did join Agatha All Along solely for Kathryn Hahn. It does look like Hahn is sticking around, so I could imagine Plaza being swayed for at least one more Marvel project. Maybe a Scarlet Witch movie? Imagine the power of Hahn, Plaza, and Olsen together.

When will we see Agatha and Billy next?
The Witches’ Road may have not led Billy to Tommy quite literally, but Agatha was able to help Billy realize what happened to his brother’s soul after the events of WandaVision. And the end of Agatha All Along has ghost Agatha ready to help Billy find Tommy, but will that result in a second season of the series? There’s been no confirmation, but Schaffer seems resolute in the story she told here while also seeming interested in playing with the characters of Agatha All Along again. There is Vision Quest, a series centered on Paul Bettany’s White Vision, headed up by Terry Matalas presumably coming sometime in 2026. If Agatha got Billy, it would be interesting for Vision to have Tommy, thus allowing at least a cameo from Agatha and Billy, but maybe that would be too many cooks in the kitchen. I just need the Maximoffs to reunite again before I grow old.

Where is Tommy, exactly?
We got a few details about Tommy, who was reincarnated in the body of a teen drowned by some bullies in a backyard pool. Even more depressingly, it seems that, unlike Billy’s Kaplan parents, Tommy’s new parents aren’t as loving or tight-knit: “The people, the family, there’s no one to love him,” Billy exclaims to Agatha. If we pull from comics history, Tommy is reborn to the Shepherd family in Springfield, New Jersey (same state as Westview!), but his super-speed abilities (similar to his uncle Pietro) cause incredible difficulties, putting him in-and-out of juvenile detention. Jail break in Vision Quest?

Will Billy be a part of the Young Avengers or not?
Billy is an integral part of the Young Avengers in the comics. One of the first, The Children’s Crusade by Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung, is all about Billy/Wiccan, Tommy/Speed, and the rest of the team finding the Scarlet Witch, so it seems incredibly likely that this will be a blueprint for the MCU going forward. In the MCU currently, Kamala Khan (a.k.a. Ms. Marvel) is busy assembling heroes for the young super team, her very first recruit being Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) in The Marvels post-credit scene, so clearly she’s just getting started. Billy does have a lot on his plate at the moment, but rest assured he will be a part of Young Avengers (Tommy, too) in due time.

Should the residents of Westview just move already?
You know Agatha’s neighbors were tired as hell seeing more witchy fights happen in Westview. Even though it seems like all threats of witchcraft happening in their backyards are finished for now, this is the MCU, so there’s no guarantee a witch won’t return again! They should follow Ralph Bohner’s lead and move away. Maybe then they could check out his one-man show in Paramus.
