Zedd shared his music-making process with BBMAs host Michelle Butueau at the 2024 Billboard Music Awards.

I’m standing here with the man, the myth, the legend, Zedd. What’s going on? 

Zedd

How are you? 

Michelle Buteau 

I love this look! 

Zedd

Oh, thank you. Likewise, you look beautiful. 

Michelle Buteau 

I mean, we could switch outfits tonight, and still, we could do that. We can, we can. We don’t have a lot of time. I have so many questions. What inspires you? Do you hear music like in the middle of the night, are you writing down notes everywhere at your apartment? Do you hear something from a long time ago and get inspired? Like, how do you do what you do?

Zedd 

I get a lot of inspiration from feelings and feelings that music creates. So not like “I’m sad, so I’m gonna sit down and write a song,” but I like to make music, and then whatever feeling I get, I just chase whatever I want to feel. So I just usually improvise on a piano, just mindlessly. And when I play something that makes me feel something, I kind of rewind, yeah? And I look like, what did I just play? And I turn that into songs.

But, yeah, but it makes sense to me. It sounds like you put your phone down.
