Joan Baez Is Thrilled Monica Barbaro Doesn’t Suck at Acting
Because, the folk legend admits, she wouldn’t have enjoyed A Complete Unknown “if I didn’t think she was good at it.”
No need to hide a middle finger behind a guitar here. Joan Baez has seen A Complete Unknown and loved it, which, she acknowledges, wouldn’t have been the outcome if she weren’t beguiled by Monica Barbaro’s Oscar-nominated performance. “I loved what she did in the film,” Baez told the Marin Independent Journal. “If I didn’t think she was good at it, I probably wouldn’t have enjoyed it in general. But she looked enough like me and she had my gestures down. You could tell who it was. She worked so hard. Kudos to her for taking the role on.” Baez went to a local cinema 11 days after A Complete Unknown was released to watch it, calling the use of music “fantastic” and story line “amusing.” One important fact-check, though: She definitely didn’t have sex with Bob Dylan the night of the Cuban Missile Crisis. The threat of nuclear war just didn’t put her in the mood. “It was pleasantly brief,” she said of that particular scene and her granddaughter’s reaction. “She said, ‘I don’t want to see my grandmother making out in a film.’” Barbaro recently told us that she was still hoping to meet Baez, as the duo have been relegated to a phone-only relationship due to their busy schedules. Hey, the Oscars are a month away. How about a red-carpet date?
